Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is a type of bone density imaging. DEXA uses X-rays to help evaluate for age-related bone loss. Most often, X-ray images of the lower spine and hips are obtained. Then, specialized software is used to compute bone density measurements from these X-rays. The bone density measurements are compared to average bone density values for normal patients of the same age.
